Oh boy, what a ride these past few days have been! First, TikTok decides to take a dramatic exit stage left in the US—only to pull a “just kidding!” the next day and come back. Then, out of nowhere, CapCut takes the same dramatic exit. But wait, there’s more! Instagram had to join the chaos by switching their grid layout from square to tall and vertical. Below is a visual of the square layout grid to the now vertical grid.

If you only have Instagram templates in the square size and need to resize to the portrait size, Canva is perfect for this with it's resizing tool. To help you, below is a step-by-step guide on how to resize your square Instagram graphics within Canva.

Canva resizing steps:

  1. Go to your Instagram square templates.

  2. Click "Resize" in the top left corner.

  3. Then go to "Custom size" and click the box next to it and input 1015 x 1350 px. Canva hasn’t updated the Instagram 4:5 ratio as yet so you will have to put in the customized sizes.

  4. Next click "Copy & resize". I would suggest keeping the square sizes because you just might be able to use them somewhere else.

  5. Finally, adjust your elements on the page accordingly to fill out the space.

Pro Tips for Designing in 1015 x 1350

  • Use the vertical space wisely: Highlight your most important information in the center to draw attention.

  • Optimize for mobile: Ensure your text is legible on smaller screens.

  • Experiment with layouts: Play around with Canva’s templates designed for taller formats.

Final Thoughts

Adapting to Instagram’s new grid size might feel like a hassle, but with Canva, it’s easier than ever to resize your designs and keep your feed looking polished. The shift to 1015 x 1350 pixels is an opportunity to rethink your creative approach and take advantage of the extra vertical space. So grab your designs, fire up Canva, and start resizing like a pro!
